Clinical Procedures for Freckles
If you visit your dermatologist, he/she can evaluate your skin and
identify which procedures can help lighten or eliminate your freckles.
Here are some of your options:
- Bleaching – One of the most common freckle removal
treatment available these days is bleaching. Bleaching agents work
by attempting to even the color of the freckle spots with the
surrounding skin. However, bleach doesn’t always work effectively,
as they tend to lighten or darken the skin in rather unwanted
levels. Bleaching creams and solutions also cause exfoliation,
resulting to rashes and slight burns.
- Facial solutions and chemicals – There are other facial
solutions which contain certain chemicals that help balance one’s
skin color, such as alpha hydroxy acids and retinoids. Alpha hydroxy
acids are available in various over-the-counter medications, and
when combined with sunblock, they show relatively successful results
on some skin types. Retinoids meanwhile are more powerful than alpha
hydroxy acids, but because of their strength dermatologists provide
them only via prescription, to prevent users from abusing the drug.
- Prescription Drugs – Other prescription drugs that are
used for freckle removal are those that contain hydroquinone. This
kind of bleaching agent lightens and fades darkened skin spots by
retarding the production of melanin in those areas. In time the dark
spots will fade to match the dominant skin color. These drugs
usually contain twice the amount of hydroquinone, as well as
tretinoin and another cortisone ingredient. One big side effect of
these drugs however, is that they are prone to damaging the skin
while getting rid of freckles. As mentioned earlier, bleaching
agents are capable of burning the skin due to the harsh ingredients
that work to remove the freckles.
- Dermatological treatment – If you want to get rid of
freckles fast and easy, then you can ask your dermatologist for
special treatments. These include photo-facial treatments, laser
surgery, and liquid nitrogen freezing treatments, which are also
used in treating other skin conditions such as acne. These
treatments are more expensive, and they take a series of sessions to
achieve best results. It also takes a longer period of time for
recovery so you must be willing to sacrifice your time, effort and
money when opting for these treatments
- Laser treatments – Considered as the best form of
dermatological method in getting rid of freckles, dermatologists use
q-switched ruby and pigmented lesion lasers to erase the spots
without evident scarring. Photo-facials, or intense pulsed light
treatment also has the same effect, while carbon dioxide and
Erbium:YAG lasers zap the skin surface to remove the pigmented
lesions. Scarring is less likely in these treatments, but the
patient is at risk to darker pigmentation, especially when the
chosen treatment didn’t suit his skin characteristics. When going
for these skin treatments, you should avoid going outdoors during
daytime, as pigmentation may recur and even get worse.
